Event: Book signing, Jack Nisbet
When: Fri, Sep 3 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Description: About the Book
Jack Nisbet turns his attention to David Douglas, the premier botanical explorer in the Pacific NW. Douglas’ discoveries include hundreds of western plants—most notably, the Douglas Fir. The Collector tracks Douglas’s fascinating history and takes readers on Douglas’ journeys into the then-obscure realms from Puget Sound to the Sandwich Islands. Nisbet evokes a lost world of early exploration, pristine nature, ambition, and cultural and class conflict with surprisingly modern resonances.

Listen to Jack Nisbet discuss “The Collector” on OPB radio

About the Author
Jack Nisbet is a historian, teacher, and author focusing on the intersection of human history and natural history in the Pacific NW. He is the author of the award-winning book “Sources of the River” and “Visible Bones: Journeys Across Times in the Columbia River Country”

Event: Own Your Future, A free community workshop.
When: Thu, Sep 16
Description: Noon to 1:30 p.m.
6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Learn how to own your future by maintaining the lifestyle you have worked for all your life. According to the Administration on Aging, 60 percent of people older than 65 will need some type of long-term care. Long-term care does not mean a complete loss of independence or control over your life. The keys to owning your future are planning early and wisely, knowing your options and taking action. This session will get you started in planning for your future needs and help you work with family members who are facing needs which involve costs. It will focus on living well and help you and your family create a roadmap for financial planning. This workshop is facilitated by Chad Peterson, C.F.P., Thrivent Financial. To register, call 541.386.2055.

Event: Comics at the Crossroads: Art of the Graphic Novel
When: Sat, Sep 18
Description: Comics at the Crossroads: Art of the Graphic Novel presents the work of 30 Northwest artists who are on the vanguard of comic arts and who are pushing it into new territory.

Comic books and graphic novels skillfully combine narrative artwork and descriptive prose, acting as contemporary social markers. Despite being referred to as “comics,” their subject matter is often not humorous, but addresses many of the serious issues that also appear in mainstream art.

This phenomenon is nowhere more important than in the Pacific Northwest, where Oregon and Washington have each attracted a large community of comic artists, graphic novelists and related publishers whose work has had international impact.

Description: Now in its sixth year, Pacific Northwest Plein Air 2010 in the Columbia River Gorge, is a series of art events and wine tasting opportunities featuring the art and literary works of accomplished painters and writers.

At the heart of the event is a five-day Paint-Out and Write-Out where works of art and writing are created at various outdoor locations in and around the Columbia River Gorge – the nation’s first designated National Scenic Area.

Works of art from the forty participating artists will be available viewing and sale from Sept. 3 – 26 at Columbia Art Gallery in Hood River. A number of other events are also planned.

Pacific Northwest Plein Air has grown in size and popularity each year, owing in part to the spectacular scenery in and around the Columbia River Gorge, and in part due to the focus on quality art and writing.

Event: Comics at the Crossroads: Art of the Graphic Novel
When: Fri, Sep 24
